FACTS ABOUT HONEY BEES

Some Interesting Facts of Honey bees are described below.

1- Honey bees are the most important pollinators for flowers, fruits and vegetables. That means that they help other plants to grow. Bees can transfer pollen between the male and female parts. It enables the plants to grow seeds and fruit.

2- The honey bees are famous for delicious honey. They can produce their honey as food stores for the hive during winter. Luckily, these efficient little workers produce 2-3 time more honey than they need, so, we get to enjoy the heavenly delight, too!

3- An average worker bee can produce around a twelfth of a teaspoon of honey during her life span of just five to six weeks.

4- Honey bees are awesome flyers. Bees can be fly at a speed of around 25 km per hour and beat their wings 200 times per second.

5- A young larva is selected to create a new queen, when the queen bee dies. This selected larva is fed with a special food “ Royal Jelly”. This Royal food strengthens the larva to evolve into a productive and fertile queen.

6- The queen bee is the most fertile and busiest in the summer season. The queen is capable of laying up to 2,000 honey bee eggs within a single day. The life span of the queen bee is up to five years.

7-The queen bee closely examine each cell of the comb before laying her eggs. A new colony is formed by laying eggs in each cell inside the honeycomb.

8-The most fertile eggs hatch into the worker bees, while, the others become male honey bees or drones.

9- There is a gloomy side of this heavenly sweet treat, over the past few decades the colonies of honey bees have been disappearing. Sadly, the root cause for this is still unknown. This honey bees’ colony collapse disorder (CCD) caused unexplained losses of managed honey bees. Which resulted in a rapid loss of adult worker bees. In certain areas the situation is so alarming that 50 to 90 % of bee colonies have disappeared.

10- Honey bees are very social and they live in colonies called hives. The members of the hive are divided into three types.

Queen Bee

The Queen is the largest bee in the colony.One queen rules the whole hive. Her job is to lay the eggs that will generate the hive’s next generation of bees. The queen also produces chemicals that guide the conduct of the other bees.

Drone Bee

The drones are the male bees, and their role is to mate with the new queen. Several hundred live in each hive during the spring and summer season. But when winter comes and the hive goes into survival mode, the drones are kicked out.

Queen Bee

All the workers are all female and their roles are to forage pollen and nectar from flowers for food. They also build and protect the hive, clean and circulate air by beating their wings. Worker bees are the only bees most people ever see flying around outside the hive.
